America Haunts recognizes the top haunted attractions for Best Scream for Your Buck – these haunt leaders spend the off-season enhancing their fear-based entertainment to create memorable experiences.

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — A great haunted attraction doesn’t happen by accident. It takes years of experience and a team of professionals mastering multiple disciplines to create the experiences that draw crowds to America’s premier haunted attractions and earn recognition for Best Scream for Your Buck.

The 2026 Best include: Erebus Haunted Attraction in Pontiac, outside of Detroit, MI; Factory of Terror in Canton, Ohio; Niles Scream Park in Niles, Michigan; The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park in San Diego and Bates Motel and Haunted Hayrides in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area.

Shortly after one Halloween season ends, the work begins on the next. Haunt professionals research, conceptualize, design, build, test, and refine. They develop new storyline twists and characters, rethink familiar scares, incorporate new technologies and special effects, and create environments designed to transport guests into another world.

Then there are the scare actors who bring it all to life in the season: they know how to read a group, build anticipation, deliver a perfectly timed scare, and make fright fun.

The mega-haunt experts who deliver the Best Scream for Your Buck pull out all the stops, combining technology, scare-cast, immersive realism, and inventive ideas to create experiences that keep guests guessing, laughing, screaming, and on edge from beginning to end.

That’s a lot of time, talent, and creativity invested in one goal: creating a valued entertainment experience.

A great scare becomes a treasured memory.

For 2026, America Haunts has named the top five attractions that exemplify the Best Scream for Your Buck, where experienced professionals and year-round creativity come together to create unforgettable Halloween-season outings.

1. Erebus Haunted Attraction — Pontiac, Michigan (Detroit area)

Erebus Haunted Attraction is a four-story descent into the elaborate mind of a mad doctor, Dr. Colber, and his world of horror, experimentation, and unexpected surprises.

Located in Downtown Pontiac, Erebus takes guests through more than a half-mile of immersive indoor environments filled with elaborate sets, live performers, special effects, and constantly changing twists. Rather than simply walking past scenes, guests become part of the experience as they move through the attraction and encounter something different around every corner.

Known for its large-scale environments and innovative approach to haunted attractions, Erebus has become a destination for Halloween fans from throughout Metro Detroit and beyond.

Nearly 30 years of pushing the boundaries of fear have made Erebus a full-scale attraction you won’t find anywhere else.

2. Factory of Terror — Canton, Ohio

25 years of manufacturing nightmares is engineered for fright and fun.

Factory of Terror has spent 25 years turning its Canton, Ohio, industrial setting into a Halloween-season tradition. The 2026 season combines multiple haunted attractions, a sprawling midway, an all-new Grimm Woods Jack-o’-Lantern walkthrough and a cast of professional performers.

Over a mile of haunted attractions, more than 100 live actors, moving walls, animatronics and special effects give the Factory a huge canvas for creating fear. Attractions include Forsaken Asylum of Dr. Morbidius, Industrial Nightmare, Massacre on Mahoning and The Abyss.

Beyond the scares, guests can explore the new Grimm Woods Halloween experience, featuring hundreds of glowing jack-o’-lanterns in an immersive Halloween walkthrough. The Factory of Terror experience also includes themed bars creating an entire evening of Halloween entertainment in one location.

3. Niles Scream Park — Niles, Michigan

Six major attractions. Reinvented year after year.

Niles Scream Park spreads its experience across 44 acres, combining multiple haunted attractions with entertainment and midway activities.

The Niles Haunted House alone offers more than 100 different paths, and the park says it would take at least seven trips to conquer them all. Its rooms, themes, sound effects, and scares change every year, giving returning guests a different experience each season. In 2026, the haunted mansion takes guests into an age-old battle between vampires and those sworn to destroy them.

The park also offers five-minute escape rooms, the Six Feet Under Bar, midway activities, photo opportunities and other entertainment, creating a full night of Halloween-season experiences.

4. The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park — San Diego, California

Locals and tourists seek out this nationally recognized outdoor haunt to encounter the beasts lurking in the haunted woods and the 3,500-square-foot maze.

The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park makes the most of its unusual setting inside San Diego’s historic Balboa Park. Its 2026 experience combines a 3,500-square-foot eXperiment Maze with a mile-long Haunted Trail winding through the gnarled oaks of historic Marston Point.

The two environments demonstrate how seasoned haunt professionals use natural surroundings alongside technology, actors and special effects to create a memorable experience.

The experience extends beyond the haunt with the Dark Carnival, featuring themed entertainment, interactive creatures, photo opportunities, food, and merchandise, giving both locals and visitors another reason to make the haunt part of a San Diego night out.

5. Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride — Glen Mills, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia area)

Check in for the three attractions. Check out with a night of memorable screams and laughs.

For three generations, the Bates family has lived on Arasapha Farm and transformed the family property into Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride, a Halloween destination, building and expanding its elaborate attractions during the off-season.

This attraction features the Bates Motel, a 25-minute Haunted Hayride, and the Revenge of the Scarecrows Haunted Corn Trail. The Haunted Hayride travels through huge sets including a 100-foot-long, 40-foot-tall drive-through insane asylum, a full-scale New England church, and a massive cavern populated by dinosaurs and flying demons.

This year’s expansion follows the significant new scenes added in 2025, including an entire Wild West town with 15 buildings and an abandoned toxic-waste dump.

Three attractions, substantial sets, and months of preparation give guests a haunt-season experience built to deliver fright and delight.

Creating a scare worth remembering takes enormous expertise, labor, and creativity.

That year-round commitment turns a night of haunt entertainment into an experience guests value, talk about, and return to with others.
